Meaning:- Galium (Gr) Milk.
                  Citraceum (L) Citrus-like, lemon scented

General description:- Slender, stoloniferous perennial.

Stems:-
1) 30-50 cm long, ascending, glabrous or short-pubescent.

Leaves:-
1) In whorls of (6-)8-10, 15-25 x 2-4 mm, oblanceolate, mucronate, thin.
    a) papillae, marginal, few and weak.

Flower:-
1) Inflorescence, long.
  a) partial inflorescences, up to 13 cm. narrowly pyramidal.
2) Corolla, 2-3 mm in diam. lemon yellow.
     a) lobes, mostly suberect, with an hyaline apex up to 0.5 mm.
3) Anthers, dark brown to blackish.

Fruit:-
1) Mericaips, finely papillose.

Habitat:- Rocky limestone slopes with dry open shrubby vegetation and open
coniferous woodland, 300-1500 m.

Distribution:- A Greek endemic scattered and fairly rare from Sterea Ellas to
Crete. Rare on Crete currently known only from a few scattered locations,

Flowering time:- May-July.

Homotypic Synonyms:- Galium insulare.

Meaning:-
Samothracicum (L) From Samothraki.

Closely related to G. citraceum and G. heldreichii, but differing in the following charscters. Though a species of doubtful status.

1) Relatively small and slender.
2) Leaves, oblanceolate, antrorsely scabridulous.
3) Few-flowered.
4) Partial inflorescences, ± patent. rather large.
5) Flowers, white to greenish-yellow flowers.

Habitat:- Dry open shrubby vegetation, scrubland vegetation open woodland and thorncushion communities in dolines, generally at 300-1400 m


Distribution:- Not recorded outside the Aegean area. A dubious species closeiy related to G. citraceum and G. heldreichii. On Crete reported from the four main massifs.

Flowering time:- May-July.
