TRIFOLIUM INFAMIA-PONERTII

Common Names:- None

Homotypic Synonyms:-Trifolium angustifolium subsp. gibellianum,Trifolium
angustifolium subsp. intermedium, Trifolium angustifolium var.
intermedium, Trifolium intermedium.

Meaning:- Trifolium (L) With three leaflets.
                  Infamia-ponertii. Meaning unknown.
                            
General description:- Short to medium erect an­nual, somewhat hairy.

Stems:-
1) 10-20 cm, appressed-hairy, few, one often taller and stiffly erect, the others
    shorter and ascending, branching at the base.

Leaves:-
1) Leaflets,10-20 mm, narrowly elliptical or lanceolate, acute.
2) Stipules, lanceolate-subulate.

Flowers:-
1) Heads, (15-)20-80 mm, solitary, ovoid or conical-cylindrical.
2) Peduncles, (10-)20-40(-60) mm.
3) Calyx-teeth, subequal, linear or subulate, finally patent, more or less evenly
    ciliate from the base to the apex.
4) Corolla, 10-12 mm, pink, shorter than or equalling the calyx-teeth.

Fruit:-
1) Legume, nearly always included in the calyx-tube, 1- to 2-seeded.

Key features:-
1) Heads, 20-80 mm,.one or few, usually terminal.
2) Calyx-throat, at maturity narrowed to a vertical slit by a bilabiate callosity.
3) Corolla, 10-12 mm, not or scarcely exceeding the calyx.

Habitat:- Sandy coastal habitats, dry open shrubby vegetation, open coniferous
woodland, occasionally in field margins, etc. 0-750(-1200) m.

Distribution:- Widespread throughout the Mediterranean. Sporadic occurrence in
the west of Crete.

Flowering time:- Apr to mid-June.
